Charity Gas
There are ways to bring the price of your gas down, such as lowering your temperature by just 1°C. The best way to bring the price down however, is to switch your gas supplier.
FAQ’s
Can I lower my energy bills by increasing my charity's energy efficiency?
This is a great way to bring the price down on your energy bills. You can make changes such as using energy saving light bulbs, or decreasing the temperature by just 1°C. All these little changes go a long way in bringing down your energy bill but the biggest thing you can do is to switch energy providers.
What are the best energy suppliers for charities?
There is not one answer for this. No one energy supplier is best for all charities, it is down to an individual basis. Use Flash Compare to see what would work for your charity.
How long does it take to switch my charity energy provider?
You are able to register with a new supplier within 28 days of your contract finishing. So how long it takes can depend on this contract end date.
Should I use green energy?
This is of course, entirely down to you. If your charity is based around environmental issues then there are green energy tariffs available. However if your charity is not involved in this, green energy can be more expensive than non-renewable energy, so you would need to work out what is best for your charity.
What is a fixed energy tariff?
A fixed tariff means you will be paying the same price for your energy for the duration of the contract, meaning no surprise bills.
What is a variable energy tariff?
This kind of tariff is riskier than a fixed one, but you can benefit from it. The price of your energy would move up and down alongside the energy market. Sometimes you would pay more than if you were on a fixed tariff, but sometimes you could pay less.
Is my charity entitled to reduced VAT on energy bills?
Many registered charities are entitled to a reduced VAT charge of just 5% on their energy bills, but it is not that straightforward. It only applies to premises where at least 60% of their activities are classified as non-business. You would need to read guidance on this from HMRC.
